Hitting the 3 wood from a difficult lie can be very challenging, but this doesn\’t mean you should avoid using the club. The three wood, after your driver is the longest golfclub in the bag, so avoiding it would mean you are sacrificing some distance, and also the opportunity to hit shorter irons into the green.
Unlike irons, which are most effective when the ball is struck with a downward swing, Fairway woods instruction requires a sweeping motion that strikes the ball as the club head moves parallel to the ground.
On practicing this, position the golf ball similar to that of the driver,(opposite the inside of your left or lead heel), then spread your weight evenly and comfortably on the balls of your feet, taking a wide stance.
Begin your backswing on a relatively low path that shaves the grass, and try to remember to maintain your right shoulder level to the ground and to pull through the swing with your left hand. Just repeat the shallow path in your downswing.
Try to maintain your head position, your upper torso should be behind the golf ball, make sure to extend your arms toward the target in the follow through.
The three wood is not meant to go sky high, so don\’t feel like you need to assist it to get it into the air, just try to keep the club head on a level track through impact. Your three-wood and fairway woods have more than enough loft to send your golf ball on it\’s way.
If you need to generate a shot with more loft, say for example to hit over water etc, try playing the ball a little further forward in your stance and lower your hands slightly in the address position. Then put a bit more weight over your back foot by leaning the spine away from the target.
Utilize these position alterations to enable a better swing to sweep the ball off the fairway, and at the same time add some loft to the shot.
Hitting a shot with a more piercing flight and lower trajectory can be achieved by trying to do the opposite, meaning, putting the golf ball in a position you normally hit your irons from, which is about 2 balls width back towards the centre of your stance. Then, adjust your weight to move a bit more onto your front foot.
These alterations to your set-up can assist you to take the loft off the golf club at impact, which will produce a lower ball flight and hopefully allow your golfball to run up onto the green.
It is much more preferred to adjust your stance, than to alter your swing to hit different shots with your fairway woods, especially when trying to produce different ball flights. Changing your stance is simpler, safer and more beneficial than trying to alter your swing for every shot.
Fairway Wood Instructions-From a Tight Lie:
1. Play your ball back of your stance
2. Sweep your golfball from the fairway
3. Strike your ball with a descending blow
4/ Move your weight to the lead side
5. Swing through the golf ball
Adjusting your stance, not your swing is the key to hitting different shots successfully with your fairway woods, and dropping strokes from your game, these tips will help you achieve the lofts you need.
Remember this, hitting the perfect shot isn\’t always, if ever, going to happen, just relax and don\’t let stress and tension creep into your game. Always tee your ball up on the same side as the trouble you may face, so you hit away from it, aim for a clear target in the distance. Don\’t worry about hitting it a mile, concentrate on accuracy, distance will come.

With so many different golf fitness programs popping up on the internet, it is difficult to know which to choose. From my perspective, here are the most important things to consider.
-Is the material provided or workout program written by someone with authority on the subject? Obviously, someone who has had experience in training a wide variety of golfers is going to have some experience to draw from. They should be a knowledgeable, experienced expert on golf fitness.
-Is the program doable and reasonable? This might sound like a silly statement until you’ve actually tried one of these programs through an internet purchase or by reading a book. If the program is too difficult or requires too much time and effort, then how is it ultimately going to benefit me?
-Will I get results that I can see with my game? Again, it is not necessary to restate the obvious, but why go through an entire program if you don’t see tangible results.
For anyone who has ever read any books outlining the basic principles of ‘how to be successful’ whether it be business, golf or life, the principles are the same. They follow along the lines of…set a specific deadline, have a detailed goal in mind, develop a plan….etc.
These are all the reasons I really love the new Golf Fitness Challenge. It is the brainchild of Susan Hill, a professional golf fitness trainer, and Craig Ballanytne, Men’s Health magazine expert. By applying the same principles to success, they have outlined a very specific 6 week golf exercise plan to get the body and game of your dreams. Last fall, they actually ran a real life case study on 20 golfers. They ran their program for both male and female golfers over a 6 week period. The age range was 18 to 65. The handicaps ranged from +3 to 31.
I bet you can guess what happened!
Given a hard deadline and some specific tasks, these golfers made some incredible discoveries and some new found improvement – just in time for prime time golf season!
Here is what a few of them had to say based on the real life testimonials.
I really got a lot more flexible. My shoulder turn improved about 30-40% at least. My hip rotation really improved also. I learned that my glutes, hip flexors, and hamstrings had a whole lot more to do with golf than I had ever imagined.
I had never viewed stretching as a way to make my body feel better and or feel more alive. I had always viewed stretching as something to warm up with. The wholeness of stretching improved my wellness feeling immensely. I just feel better now – bottom line.
Michael, Handicap 9.2, Age 62
I found my core strength improved. This was evident in my increased ability to stay stable in my lower body during the backswing and the initial transition move. I have been striking the ball more crisply.
I have experienced greater flexibility in my hip pelvis region. I am hitting the ball higher than I have in quite some time.
Thank you for including me in your program.
Stephen, Handicap 21, Age 59
For golfers looking to finally achieve some specific measurable results with your game, my money and my time will be placed here, Golf Fitness Challenge.
