How to Prepare for Your Next Golf Outing or Vacation
Planning your next golf trip requires a lot of effort. There are many aspects to consider depending on how far you are going to be traveling. Many people make poor choices with regards to hotel and lodging. Oftentimes, a rental on a golf home is readily available to golf enthusiasts but they don’t realize it.
It is important to get excited about the trip. We all love to golf right? Well, most of us do. Every time I plan a golf trip I can’t taper my enthusiasm. My girl friend thinks I am crazy to get so excited to plan a golf trip. But, I love her anyway.
When I am planning my trip I always include my brother Charles and his friend Mike. We always have a hoot together. Plus, our wives get along. So, while we are on the links they are out shopping so it is a win win for all of us. Nothing like keeping the family happy right?
How can you choose a golfing location that fits your needs? Well, it really depends on how much time you have allocated for your golf vacation. I usually choose a location within a 3-4 hour drive. We typically don’t fly so that we can afford more rounds of golf and the wives can go shop with a little extra money in their pocket. So, everyone wins.
Deciding where to stay is probably the most important aspect of your whole trip. Back in the day when we first started going on golf outings we stayed at a nice hotel or resort. Now we opt to rent a home on or near the course. Typically, we will get a 5-6 bedroom house and everyone will stay there. My brother even bought one of the homes we stayed in on one of our outings. Being on or near the greens is a good feeling. Plus, some late night beer drinking and driving on the range never hurts either.
Prices on golf homes? Well, with the economy tanking like it is most who purchased a golf home in southern california are feeling the pinch of the economy. We’ve seen home prices for golf homes in Southern California come down to an all time low. So, some great deals can be found with a little bit of research.
Getting a golf trip together is a bit difficult until you get your system down. And, after 10 years of planning these trips, I’ve got it down now. Like I mentioned before we prefer to stay on the courses now. Renting a golf home is far more desirable for us. However, your budget may not allow that so if you are a little low on funds then you may just decide to stay at a hotel near the course.

If you love celebrities and golf, the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf event is a great way to spend a few days in the California desert.
This past season while vacationing in Palm Springs I had the opportunity to participate in the what has become one of the top celebrity golf events in the United States. As with many celebrity golf events, the Frank Sinatra is presented in a five-player team gross and net scramble golf tournament that has recently found a home at the Eagle Falls Golf course in the heart of the California desert.
Just outside of Palm Springs in the east end of the Coachella valley is the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, home to the tournament’s three nights of parties as well as a spectacular luncheon and fashion show that keeps everybody involved in one way or another. The first night there is a pairings party where the amateur golfers a treated to a feast in the Fantasy Springs Events Center. There I got to mingle with such celebrities as baseball greats Rollie Fingers and Steve Garvey, along with actors like Joe Mantegna, Tim Reid, Kevin Sorbo and Barry Williams, and there was also former football stars such as Vince Ferragamo and Tommy Kramer.
In making up each team, there was one celebrity and four amateur contestants that combined each day to make up the full team. The team of four amateur players remain together for two consecutive days while the celebrity contestant changed teams on the second day so to bring a different flavor to the experience.
The event itself kicks off Thursday night with a dinner and pairings party that had all faces in attendance enjoying an Italian gourmet meal. On that first night I was paired with Fred “The Hammer” Williamson. Fred is a former football star who played for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders. He appeared in both Superbowl I and Superbowl IV. From there he went on to fame as an actor and producer having appeared in over 80 movies.
The next day Fred played as the celebrity in my amateur group and along the way gave me golf tips that helped me shoot one of the best rounds of my life. As it turned out Fred, who is quite a golfer and from what I was to learn had recently won the NFL retired players annual golf event, was the overall two – day champion of the tournament.
To close out the first day of golf, there was another dinner followed by a Live & Silent Auction. That night I sat back and watched the faces that came out to the event and the camaraderie that came with it. Tired from all the festivities, I went up to my room on got a good nights sleep ready for another great day of golf.
The next day I played a second round of golf at the Eagle Falls course. This time my team was paired with Elke Sommer. Elke is quite a lady and takes her golf quite seriously. That evening, the event was wrapped up with a reception followed by an award dinner and then a Night Cap Party that was invitation only. In between the mouth -watering food and charity auctions, there was entertainment that included singers and comedians.
The Frank Sinatra Starkey Hearing Foundation Celebrity Invitational, which is dedicated to the memory and music of “Old Blue Eyes” Frank Sinatra and benefits the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center at the Eisenhower Medical Center. It is fantastic fun – filled event that are sure to create memories that will last a lifetime. A must stop on your next Palm Springs vacation.

On my last last trip to the Palm Springs, I took a day off from the family activities and started looking around for a place to play some golf. While my kids took their beach gear to lounge at the pool and I grabbed my golf bag and headed off to the Eagle Falls Golf Resort just outside of Palm Springs.
Before I left I searched on line for some of the top courses and found the Eagle Falls Golf Resort which is part of the Fantasy Spring Casino in Indio. Designed by renown golf architect Clive Clark, the Eagle Falls Golf Resort has carved out of the desert a beautiful golf course that is full of elevations, water features and foliage rarely seen on a golf course that is open to the public.
This18 hole course has three sets of tees with distances ranging from 5,729 to 6,715 depending upon whether you set up at the Falcon, Hawk or Eagle t – boxes. At par 72 the course is a challenge to the high and low handicapper.
The signature hole is the par five 18th which has a working waterfall, hence the name Eagle Falls.
In the distance you can see the twelve story 250 room tower of Fantasy Springs Casino hotel.
All told the course has three par fives and three par threes. According to the golf shop and some of the promotional literature I read Eagle Falls was named the desert’s best value course two years in a row by Greenskeeper.org and is the site of the annual Playboy Golf scramble as well as the Frank Sinatra Celebrity golf event, benefiting the Barbara Sinatra Children’s charities.
Rates range from under a hundred dollars for weekday and twilight t – times and there are special rates for golfers staying the the casino’s hotel.
The pro shop is not much to look at, but it was fully stocked with the latest gear. There is also a snack bar and attractive girls selling food and drink on the course. There are golf carts with GPS trackers built in so you don’t have to guess how far your ball is to the nearest hazard or green.
When I got done, I went over to the casino and spent a couple of hours at the black jack table. The perfect end to my day in the desert.
